ICOS-Spain stations
A national network of atmospheric, ocean and ecosystem observation platforms contributing to ICOS.
The ICOS-Spain network consists of seven stations distributed across the three ICOS domains: Atmosphere, Ocean and Ecosystem. Together, they extend ICOS coverage to southwestern Europe and the subtropical North Atlantic, spanning a wide range of environments representative of the region.
The Atmosphere domain includes three sites. The Izaña station is hosted at the centennial high-mountain Izaña Observatory in Tenerife, which has been a key global reference site for free-tropospheric measurements for decades. El Arenosillo station, in Huelva, provides observations from one of the southernmost areas of continental Europe, facing the Atlantic. CIBA station, in Valladolid, represents a continental inland environment in central Spain.
In the Ocean domain, CanOA is a mobile station on a merchant vessel that regularly operates between Gran Canaria and Barcelona, collecting data across the subtropical North Atlantic and the western Mediterranean. ESTOC is a fixed site north of Gran Canaria with decades of continuous ocean measurements in the subtropical North Atlantic.
The Ecosystem domain is represented by Majadas de Tiétar, in Cáceres, which monitors a Mediterranean oak savanna, or dehesa, a characteristic ecosystem of the Iberian Peninsula, and by Aguamarga, in Almería, which monitors a semi-arid espartal ecosystem located in one of Europe’s climatic extremes.
In addition, Barcelona hosts an urban greenhouse gas monitoring network developed within the framework of the ICOS Cities project.
A semi-arid esparto-grassland ecosystem station in Almería, operated by UGR and EEZA-CSIC. It measures ecosystem–atmosphere CO₂, water vapour and energy fluxes and auxiliary environmental variables to study carbon and water exchanges and semi-arid ecosystem functioning. A ship-based ocean observation station in the Canary Islands, operated by QUIMA-IOCAG-ULPGC. It measures surface seawater pCO₂ and associated oceanographic variables to study the marine carbon cycle and air–sea CO₂ exchange. A continental atmospheric station near Valladolid, operated by UVa. It measures atmospheric mole fractions of CO₂, CH₄ and CO, along with meteorological variables to study atmospheric composition and continental air-mass transport. A coastal atmospheric station in Mazagón, Huelva, operated by INTA. It measures atmospheric mole fractions of CO₂, CH₄ and CO, along with meteorological variables to study atmospheric composition and regional air-mass transport. A fixed ocean time-series station north of Gran Canaria, jointly operated by PLOCAN, QUIMA-IOCAG-ULPGC and IEO-CSIC. It measures surface seawater pCO₂ and pH, associated oceanographic variables and meteorological variables to study the marine carbon cycle and long-term variability in the subtropical North Atlantic. An urban and peri-urban atmospheric monitoring network in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, coordinated by ICTA-UAB. It measures atmospheric CO₂ and CH₄ mole fractions at five sites and CO at UPC-Agropolis to study greenhouse gas variability across contrasting land uses. A high-mountain atmospheric station in Tenerife, operated by IARC-AEMET. It measures atmospheric mole fractions of CO₂, CH₄, N₂O and CO, along with meteorological variables to study background composition and transport in the subtropical North Atlantic free troposphere. A Mediterranean dehesa ecosystem station in Cáceres, operated by CEAM. It measures ecosystem–atmosphere CO₂, water vapour and energy fluxes and auxiliary environmental variables to study carbon and water exchanges and Mediterranean ecosystem functioning.
